UTOPIA Adds Fibernet as a New Provider

Local ISP and co-location company Fibernet has been added a new provider on UTOPIA. It appears that they will be providing Internet-only services and plan to serve both homes and businesses. The official press release is light on details and Fibernet doesn’t currently have UTOPIA pricing on their website.

As an aside, this popped up in Google Alerts and I didn’t end up getting a copy of the press release directly despite a promise that I would be on that list. Hey UTOPIA guys? On the ball with the information distrubution por favor?

I don’t see anything on the FiberNet Utah or UTOPIA site on this?

The UTOPIA site does not show either FiberNet or FuzeCore on the service provider page.

Still shows only 3 providers show there. Mstar remains off the list but no new service providers have been added.

It would be nice if they would get with the program and make those minor changes. Heck, I’ll volunteer to do it for free if that’s what it takes.

I’m sure Utopia will get to it soon.
    Patience…

  5. Harold Bills says:

Interesting that the Fibernet product line is not related to residential services and the revenue model may be very different from the traditional, “How much can we charge each home?” thinking. This could help the revenue picture in a big way. It’s about time somebody got out of the box.

  6. Capt. Video says:

The more businesses the better for the model.

However, it’s not like UTOPIA did not already have providers that already focused on business accounts.

I think Veracity does ONLY business accounts and I think XMission does business accounts in addition to residential (as does Mstar). FuzeCore also appears to be business focused so I’m not sure how different and “outside the box” this is?

Given that there was no shortage of providers (Qwest and many others) that focused on business before UTOPIA existed, and many are under longer term contracts, I would not expect a landslide of new UTOPIA accounts.

But these new providers will surely bring a considerable amount of business to uTOPIA and that is exactly what they need…more customers on the network!

I’m pretty sure the idea is to convert existing customers to the UTOPIA infrastructure, a pretty smart move. It’s an immediate influx of revenue with zero marketing effort.

  8. Capt. Video says:

Yes, that would be a sweet deal. Little to no installation costs (within the building), moving existing customers on FiberNet and FuzeCore (and other new service providers) to UTOPIA.

The more of that UTOPIA can get the better!

  9. Warren Woodward says:

By last count, XMission has over 80% of UTOPIA business subscribers.

Service Provider options has never been the hurdle. It has always been installation costs.

UTOPIA, even in its free spending heyday, has not been able to front the often five- and even six- figure installation costs to trench under a parking lot and then run fiber through a large office building. Getting in the block is one thing. Getting into the building is a different prospect entirely.

There is some good out-of-the-box thinking going on about solving these difficulties.
