Comcast Launches DOCSIS 3.0 in Utah with Sneaky Higher Prices

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Comcast has launched DOCSIS 3.0 service in their Utah markets with speeds up to 16M/2M. (Media-whoring alert: I got quoted in the article.) The speeds are about on-par with entry-level UTOPIA connections, but the upstream can’t do any higher. Comcast has no doubt chosen Utah as one of its first DOCSIS 3.0 markets because of systems like UTOPIA.

Commenter xxzone pointed out that the 16M/2M tier is an automatic upgrade for users on the old 8M/1M tier… at a price increase of $10/mo. As Consumerist has previously noted, smart users will likely downgrade to the 12M/2M tier to save some money. After all, is 4Mbps of extra downstream really worth another $10?

Not to mention you will only get to your 250 Gigs limit quicker with the faster speeds.

And upgrading to a business account doesn’t help. You still have 250 Gigs. Yeah I know. This is a direct quote from their escalation department when I called. In residential area’s they don’t have another network for business they can connect you to.

I’m waiting for FTTN because at least I know what I’m getting and it’s plenty fast .. until Utopia shows up that is 😀

Hey, you could add their off-site backup service and reach it even faster! 😉

Sorry, but comcast’s upgrades here are NOT docsis 3. They are “blast” which comcast has offered in 80% of thier markets for a year or more. Still docsis 1.1

Docsis 3.0 should roll out in the next 30-90 days and will offer an “ultra” tier of 22/5 and an extreme tier of 50. And monthly modem rental is now mandatory on any of the docsis 3 tiers.

To clarify, Docsis 3 modem rental is no longer a requirement as retail channels are now allowed to sell Docsis 3 capable devices.

Also worth noting that the new docsis 3 tiers are expensive ~75 for the 22/5 and ~140 for the 50/10

Did Comcast really tell you they had the limit on business class? When I signed up for my business account I specifically asked about bandwidth caps and was told there were no caps for business customers.

Comcast has lowered the service rates from 22000/2200 to 17600/2200
