Comcast to Customers: All Your Dollars Are Belong To Us

Seems like Comcast is bumping up rates all over the nation. Chicago, Houston, Seattle, San Francisco and Lancaster, PA have all seen big bumps in pricing from 6.9% to as high as 12.5%. This is on top of a 4.1% increase foisted upon us in January. The company is blaming increased customer service costs; they've hired about 400 more techs and customer service staff. I call it a shameless attempt to use TV revenues to further subsidize their other offerings. How long until the Wasatch Front sees yet another pricing jump?

I just thought I would add that I’ll bet anything the reason the wasatch front is getting the price hikes that all of these communities is solely because of UTOPIA. No matter what Comcast claims in public, it’s obvious that UTOPIA is making them nervous enough to start competing, especially in the price aspect.

Woops, should have remebered to mention this is Jesse Weber, not Jesse Harris, maintainer of the site.

They’re probably a bit relieved that UTOPIA absorbs a disproportionate number of the high-bandwidth power users and lowers their network costs, at least as a short-term benefit. Of course, that leaves the ill-informed to continue to pay ever-increasing rates to Big Cable.

What happen? Somebody set up us the bomb. BTW, where is UTOPIA in service now?

At last glance, it was operational in parts of Murray, Midvale, Orem and West Valley. All of the cities under the RUS loan (which, I believe, includes Brigham City, Centerville, Lindon, Payson, Perry and Tremonton) should be complete by March 2008 and are currently under construction with limited availability. The other member cities (including Layton) should done by Summer 2008. Once UTOPIA goes revenue-positive in 2012, they’ll start building in non-pledging cities (Cedar City, Cedar Hills, Riverton and Washington City).
