Broadband Bytes: December 13-19, 2008

I think 2009 is going to end up being the year of broadband. Advocates are very well-organized and the new administration is putting a lot of post-election emphasis on telecom policy, an issue that’s typicaly given only election-cycle lip service.

In the UK Virgin have released a 50mbps cable service and other ISP’s are looking to Bonded ADSL as a way of delivering high speed internet over the existing telecoms infrastructure.

I predict 2009 to be the year of Bonded Internet!

I don’t think bonded DSL is going anywhere. I have 1.5meg DSL even know the dslam serving my neighborhood supports 7meg, Qwest however does not offer the 7meg DSL because the DSLAM is connected to the rest of the network by a triple bonded T1 line setup. nor is Qwest likely to bring faster then 1.5meg to my area unless it is in the form of FTTN(really adsl2+) so that they don’t have to share it with anyone. But even then I don’t believe Qwest has any plans to upgrade this area anytime in the next century.

My sole hope is that Utopia will get here and save me from my 1.5meg nightmare.

In other news i here the Telco’s are in line now for a bailout “stimulus” package aimed at getting better broadband out their next year, any chance that Utopia or any other muni network will get anything out of it? Or will this just be more free money with no string attached for AT&T and friends.

Given how badly the USF was/is managed, there are a lot of others that share your concern about any broadband spending. Nobody wants to subsidize the big guys anymore; the question is how to get it into truly innovative products without getting them to file suit over not getting a big slice of the pie.
