UTOPIA in Brigham City: Open for Business

A press release issued today makes it official: UTOPIA is ready to sign up customers in Brigham City. The open house is still on for 1PM today (though the press release already quotes those events with special time travel technology) to answer questions and make sure service is available to your home or business.

Now if they just knew where the lit fiber is to make a map of where it’s available.

  2. Jesse says:

That’s been a persistent problem since the new management took over. The mapping data wasn’t up to snuff and GIS is a pain to work with.

  3. Mike Bignell says:

    I just love it.
When I contact UTOPIA to see if service is available at my address they have to check with someone at slssolutions.com to see if there is service in the area before they can respond.

Just out of curiosity what are they using for the wireless out it Brigham city? 802.11y(wimax on 3.5ghz band), 802.11abg?

  5. devan says:

I just got my service on Friday i bought a 30/30 line and so far it is great. The installers told me I am the first residential customer on the network. However they did have salesmen going door to door in the service area speaking to people.

  6. Mike says:

Devan, what is your address so we know where in Brigham they are starting?
    Thanks,

  7. Capt. Video says:

It appears that today, some 5+ months after launch, UTOPIA has 1000 customers in Brigham City.

I think that is pretty good!

  8. Mike says:

Now if those 1000 customers actually had service…..
Just more of the Real soon now.

  9. Capt. Video says:

I’m confused. Are you saying the 1000 sales in Brigham City are not 1000 active customers?

    I understood they were?

  10. Mike says:

I could be wrong but I thought that it was the number of people that had signed up for service not active customers. We have to have like 2500 people sign up in Brigham before they will finish stringing fiber. Even then there could be some blackout areas if not enough people sign up in that area to justify the fiber. If the 1000 are active customers I certainly would like to know where they are hiding them.

  11. Capt. Video says:

Perhaps I’m confused because the Standard Examiner’s Nancy Fuller wrote such a poor story?

Brigham warms to utopia http://bit.ly/rzw6e ?

Out of the blue it says, “Matheson told the council it originally set a July 18th date, but licensing for television was a very long process.” (July 18th date for what? The story does not mention how licensing for television is tied into the date or anything else?)

Hugh goes on to say, “The average Brigham City household that currently has broadband is paying $150 per month.” Is that just for broadband? Does that mean Comcast data service is not available there?

Adding to my confusion…later in the story Councilman Bob says, “I think the television is going to be a great selling point. We hope Comcast and everybody will want to connect on to the system.” (Does Comcast NOT currently offer television in Brigham City?)

    I’m just sooooo confused!

  12. Capt. Video says:

If that’s the case…I’m disappointed, but still somewhat impressed. (perhaps?)

Is the 1000 including the active customers or are there 1000 committed?

    How committed?
    To what offering?

If they got 1000 people to say they would pay thousands for the install (on the 20 year plan) I’m still impressed. In fact I would be very impressed Brigham City has what? About 10,400 homes and 1000 is almost 10%. Now if it’s just 10% that say they will take UTOPIA, I’m not impressed, but if 10% will do the SAA plan….I’m very impressed.

  13. Mike says:

We don’t call it the sub-standard exaggerator for nothing.

  14. Mike says:

When they come around to sign up people there is no commitment to a specific offering just signing your life away for the next 20 years (estimated to be about $25 per month depending on how many sign up).

  15. Jesse says:

Word on the street is that interest has been high enough to successfully start executing the SAA. So Mike is apparently up in the night.

  16. Mike says:

Well I haven’t heard sh#^. What exactly is it that I’m up in the night about? This is exactly the problem that I have with Utopia, us Brigham City residents are suffering from mushroom syndrome. The word on the street that I’ve heard (not my street) is that in some areas the take rate is 50%+ so they probably have started executing the SAA. Just remember that I’m in the middle of the (according to utopia) half footprint in Brigham and I’ve seen ZERO work to finish. The main east west line is less than a block away from my house.

  17. Mike says:

You know it’s kind of funny the article states 900 subscribers (not actual paying customers) and goes on to say “the first homes connected between Thanksgiving and the new year” (click the continuation link at the top of the page). I thought that was pretty clear.
